Fighting the Social Symptoms of Illness

Children confined to long hospital stays or living in a hospice or rehabilitation center struggle with separation from their homes, friends, and the normal patterns of their young lives now disrupted by illness.

The donation of a new book can transport a child to another place or a toy can create an opportunity to play with a new friend in a foreboding setting.

For several years, K.I.D.S. has made the playrooms in the Boston Medical Center (BMC) a more joyful place for children by providing new toys and books.

This partnership also gives needed clothes for people served by out-patient services and for those who use the hospital’s food and clothing bank. Sensitive to the economic hardships of their patients, BMC is one of the few medical centers in the country which makes a food and clothing pantry available to its patients.

Johnson & Johnson is another K.I.D.S. partner company which has donated medicines, such as TylenolÒ.  K.I.D.S. has distributed this product to more than 200 community health care centers serving children and families in high poverty areas such as Appalachia, native American reservations and inner cities.

K.I.D.S. also worked with the NYC Administration for Child Services (ACS) to provide juvenile products, particularly cribs, to families in need. The donation of a crib to a family in need can potentially help prevent S.I.D.S. which can be caused when infants sleep in their parents’ beds.
